Tsunami Evacuation: Head for High Ground
Recognize warning signs and get to safety fast.
WARNING SIGNS: a strong or long earthquake near the coast; ocean water suddenly pulling out (exposing the seabed); a loud roar from the ocean. Any of these = MOVE NOW. Do not wait for an official alert.
IMMEDIATE ACTION:
1. Get to high ground โ at least 100 feet above sea level, or 1 mile inland, on foot. Don't wait for a car; traffic = gridlock.
2. If you can't reach high ground, go UP inside a sturdy reinforced-concrete building (4+ stories).
3. As a last resort, climb a strong, deeply rooted tree.
DO NOT go to the beach to watch. Tsunami waves arrive in a series; the first is often NOT the biggest. Waves can keep coming for hours.
AFTER: stay on high ground until officials say all clear. Re-enter only after the water fully recedes and roads are cleared.
LIVE-AHEAD habit: know your evacuation route before a trip. Practice it once with family.
