Tornado Survival in an Open Field

Stuck outside with no shelter โ€” where to go.

IF YOU CAN'T REACH A STURDY BUILDING OR STORM CELLAR: 1. Find the lowest ground available โ€” a ditch, ravine, or depression. Lie flat, face-down. 2. Cover your head and neck with your arms and hands. If you have a jacket or blanket, pull it over yourself. DO NOT: - Hide under a highway overpass. Winds funnel under it and can be stronger โ€” it is a death trap. - Try to outrun a tornado in a car. Drive perpendicular only if the tornado is far and you can clearly see it. Otherwise abandon the car for a ditch. MOBILE HOMES: leave them. They offer almost no protection. Go to the nearest sturdy building or ditch. WATCH vs WARNING: a Watch means conditions are right; a Warning means a funnel is sighted or detected โ€” act on the Warning. Tune in to NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts. Tornadoes can wrap in rain and be invisible at night. If you feel a lull, do not come out โ€” it may be the eye. Stay down.
