Volcanic Eruption: Ash & Lahar Survival

Protect airway and lungs, and escape lahars.

EVACUATE EARLY if you live near an active volcano. Lahars (volcanic mudflows) can travel 50+ mph down valleys and are the #1 killer. DURING AN ERUPTION: 1. Get uphill and upwind if possible. 2. Protect your lungs from ash: an N95 mask is best. A damp cloth over nose/mouth works as a backup. 3. Protect your eyes: goggles or glasses. Do not wear contacts โ€” ash under lenses can scratch the cornea. ASH FALL: - Stay indoors. Close doors, windows, vents. Tape gaps. - Do NOT drive โ€” ash destroys engines and makes roads slick. If stuck, pull over, shut off the engine, cover the air intake. - Sweep ash from roofs to prevent collapse (wet ash is very heavy). Protect workers (masks, goggles). WATER: ash contaminates water supplies. Use stored water. Strain through cloth, then let settle, then use. Boil before drinking. AFTER: wait for all-clear. lahars can recur long after an eruption, especially during rain.
