Evacuating New York City in an Emergency

Get out of a dense metro fast when disaster hits.

THE PROBLEM: 8+ million people, limited bridges/tunnels, jammed transit. RULE 1: Don't rely on a car in the first 2 hours. Bridges and tunnels jam instantly. LEAVE BY FOOT/BIKE FIRST: - Head north on foot (Central Park, then up Manhattan), or east across bridges to Queens/Long Island, or north into the Bronx and beyond. - Carry a map (cell towers overload). A paper subway map doubles as a walking map. - A folding bike is the fastest tool in gridlock. BRIDGES OUT OF MANHATTAN: - George Washington Bridge โ†’ New Jersey (north). - Lincoln/Holland Tunnels โ†’ NJ (jam fast). - 59th Street / Williamsburg / Manhattan / Brooklyn Bridges โ†’ east. - RFK (Triborough) Bridge โ†’ Queens / Bronx. DESTINATIONS: - North = safer for many scenarios (rural NJ, upstate NY, Hudson Valley). - Avoid the coastline (tsunami/coastal storm + congestion). KIT: keep a 3-day go-bag at home and at work. Include a contact card, cash, N95 masks, water purification tablets, and a hand-crank radio. MEET-UP: agree on a rally point OUT of the city with family ahead of time.
