Leave early and survive smoke and fast-moving fire.
WILDFIRES MOVE FAST in dry, windy conditions. Embers travel a mile+ ahead of the main fire.
EVACUATE THE MOMENT A WARNING IS ISSUED. Do not wait for mandatory. Roads clog; visibility drops to zero in smoke.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE:
- Park in the direction of escape, windows up, keys in.
- Wear long sleeves, long pants, sturdy shoes, N95 mask, goggles. Cover your head.
- Pack: go-bag (water, meds, copies of insurance/deeds), pets, a flashlight.
IF TRAPPED IN A CAR:
- Drive to a clear area free of vegetation if possible.
- Park. Roll up windows. Shut off the AC so it's on recirculate. Lie on the floor. Cover yourself with a blanket. Call 911.
IF TRAPPED IN A HOUSE:
- Go to an interior room at the center, away from windows. Fill sinks/tubs with water. Keep a wet towel over your face.
AFTER: do not return until officials clear it. Watch for hot spots, smoldering debris, and downed power lines.
WATER & AIR: smoke makes air unsafe for the heart/lung-compromised. If you can't leave, shelter, seal gaps, run a HEPA air purifier if you have one.
