Flooded Car: Escape Before It's Too Late

You have 30–60 seconds. The window only opens easily before the water rises. Here is the exact sequence to get out alive.

THE CLOCK IS SHORT - A car can sink in 30–60 seconds once it's in water. The doors will NOT open against water pressure. Your only reliable exit is a WINDOW, and you must act before the water covers it. THE 4-STEP ESCAPE (memorize: SEATBELT–WINDOW–CHILDREN–OUT) 1. SEATBELT: Unbuckle immediately. If it jams, CUT it with a seatbelt cutter or any sharp blade (knife, heavy scissors) clipped within reach. 2. WINDOW: Open or roll down a SIDE window right now, before the water rises over it. If power windows are dead and it's already underwater, break a SIDE window with a spring-loaded center punch or a window-breaker tool — aim for a corner. Do NOT try the windshield or rear window (often laminated) or kick it. 3. CHILDREN: Unbuckle kids oldest-to-youngest... actually youngest FIRST, oldest last, so the oldest can scramble out while you handle the youngest. Push the youngest out the window first. 4. OUT: Once everyone is out the window, get onto the roof of the car and onto something floating, then onto higher ground. KEEP THESE TWO TOOLS IN EVERY CAR, CLIPPED TO THE KEYRING OR SUNVISOR - A seatbelt cutter (integrated blade). - A spring-loaded window breaker / center punch. Both cost a few dollars and live-saving-cheap. DO NOT - Wait for the car to fill 'to equalize pressure' unless every other option is gone — waiting risks panic and drowning. - Try to open the DOOR against water pressure (won't work, wastes time and air). - Waste precious seconds on your phone. Get out first, THEN call 911 from the bank.
