Survive a Pandemic or Disease Outbreak

How to stay safe during a disease outbreak or pandemic — hygiene, isolation, supplies, and how to care for the sick at home.

BEFORE AN OUTBREAK 1. Keep a 2-4 week supply of food, water and essentials, plus a 30+ day supply of any prescription meds. 2. Stock: hand sanitizer (60%+ alcohol), soap, disinfectant wipes, nitrile gloves, N95 masks, a thermometer, fever reducer, fluids with electrolytes. 3. Know your local health department and your doctor's telemedicine contact. 4. Stay up to date on routine vaccines. IF AN OUTBREAK BEGINS 1. Wash hands with soap for 20 sec, often; use sanitizer when soap is unavailable. 2. Distance: avoid crowds, poorly ventilated indoor spaces, and sick people. Mask use cuts spread of airborne illnesses. 3. Disinfect high-touch surfaces (phones, doorknobs, light switches, keys) daily. 4. Do not touch eyes, nose, mouth with unwashed hands. 5. If you feel sick: STAY HOME. Call your doctor or health line before going in, so they can prepare. Isolate from family; use a separate bathroom if possible. CARING FOR SOMEONE SICK AT HOME - Keep them in a separate, well-ventilated room. Wear a mask + gloves when you enter, then wash hands after. - Hydrate (water, broth, electrolyte drinks), manage fever with acetaminophen/ibuprofen per directions. - Watch warning signs needing 911: trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, bluish lips/face, confusion, can not keep fluids down. KEEP YOUR HEAD - Stress and rumor spread faster than disease. Use one or two trusted sources (CDC, WHO, your local health department) and ignore panic posts. Focus on what you can control.
