Trapped in a Collapsed Building -- Survival & Rescue

If a building comes down on you: make an air pocket, signal quietly, conserve water and oxygen, and wait. Urban Search & Rescue teams work for days; the goal is to be alive when they reach you.

IF A BUILDING COLLAPSES WHILE YOU'RE IN IT -- breathe, get noticed, wait. 1. DON'T PANIC, DON'T MOVE FAST. Slow breaths. Anxiety wastes air and dust fills your lungs. Tell yourself you will be found. 2. MAKE AN AIR SPACE. Get into a 'void': under a sturdy desk, next to a fallen column, beside a heavy object (the 'triangle of life'). Stay off any further moving debris. 3. COVER MOUTH AND NOSE. Pulverized concrete and dust are sharp and toxic; use a shirt, mask or handkerchief. 4. DO NOT YANK DEBRIS. Pulling one piece can trigger another collapse. Brace loose things instead of removing them. 5. TAP, DON'T SHOUT. Three taps on a metal pipe carry far and save your breathing. Yelling fills the void with dust and dehydrates you. Use short 'Help' or 3-tap patterns every few minutes, then rest and wait. 6. CONSERVE WATER AND ENERGY. The first 24h are risky; rescuers work for days. Stay still, sip water if you have it, ration every drop. 7. LIGHT HELPS -- SAVE IT. Use the phone flashlight to signal, but keep it in airplane mode and off between sends; a charged radio or whistle is more reliable than a dead phone. WHEN YOU HEAR RESCUERS - Tap; rescue teams use listening devices for taps and breath. - Quietly tell them how many people are with you and any injuries. - Drop a tiny piece of gravel toward their sound so they can pinpoint you. DO NOT - Move supporting beams or pillars. - Light a match or lighter -- a gas leak plus a spark = explosion. Phone flashlight is safer. - Drink flood/sewage water from broken pipes; it is contaminated. BEFORE anything collapses (quake zones, old structures) - Practice 'DROP, COVER, HOLD ON' -- bad earthquake response IS how most people get trapped. - Keep a tiny kit at your desk: goggles, N95, 1L water, whistle, small flashlight, light stick, hand-crank radio. A whistle is heard long after your voice gives out. IF TRAPPED ABOVE GROUND WITH A BLOCKED EXIT - Hang a bright cloth out a partly open window to signal air rescue. - Stay near an exterior wall -- search dogs and thermal cameras focus there. - Keep kids and elders warm; temperature extremes kill before thirst does. The mind is your best tool. Survivors have been found after 10+ days. Prayer, slow breathing, and strict patience are how you wait.
