Live data: EPA RadNet near-real-time air monitors (official US fixed stations) and Safecast open citizen-science sensors. Normal background ≈ 0.05–0.15 µSv/h · Elevated > 0.5 · High > 1.0 · Critical > 5.0 µSv/h. For situational awareness — always follow official emergency orders.
Fallout survival — the basics
- • Go deep, go center: a basement or the middle of a large building — the more mass between you and the fallout, the better.
- • Stay put 24–48h: fallout radiation drops fast in the first day. Don't evacuate into the plume.
- • Upwind of the blast: if you must move, go upwind and perpendicular to the wind direction.
- • KI pills: only take potassium iodide if officials tell you to — it protects the thyroid, not the rest of you.
