Christian Signs — Key Words of Faith
Learn the essential signs for sharing and receiving the Word of God in ASL. Practice these to sign Bible verses, pray, and worship with the Deaf community.
Jesus
Point to the center of each palm with the middle finger of the opposite hand — showing the nail marks from the cross.
God
Open your dominant hand with fingers up and thumb to the side, then move it forward and down from your forehead — like showing respect and power coming down.
Love
Cross both closed fists over your chest (like wrapping your arms around yourself), then pull them outward — the sign for love.
Faith / Believe
Touch your forehead with your index finger (for 'know'), then bring both hands together with fingers interlaced (for 'trust').
Church
Make a 'C' handshape with your dominant hand, tap your chin, then tap the back of your other hand — the sign for church.
Bible / Book
Put your palms together in front of you (like a closed book), then open them like you're turning pages — the sign for book/Bible.
Pray
Clasp both hands together, palms touching, fingers interlaced — the sign for pray.
Holy Spirit
Make 'H' handshape near your forehead, then move both open hands forward and down like wind or breath flowing out.
Cross / Salvation
Trace a cross on your chest with your index finger — for the cross. For salvation, cross arms over chest then open them outward and up.
Heaven
Make flat 'B' hands and circle them around each other above your head, then open them upward — the sign for heaven.
Angel
Make 'A' handshapes near your shoulders, then move them up and out like wings spreading.
King
Make a 'K' handshape with your dominant hand, touch your left shoulder, then drag it across to your right hip — like a king's sash.
Baptism
Make 'B' handshapes with both hands, dip them forward and down — like going under water.
Amen
Clasp flat hands together, then bring them down slightly while nodding — affirming 'so be it.'
Grace
Make 'G' handshapes, move them in a circle in front of your chest, then open them outward — a gift freely given.
Glory
Open both hands with fingers spread, move them from your chest upward and outward like light radiating.

Sign Language — Speak Without Talking
In a disaster, sound may be gone or you may be unable to speak. A simple sign can save a life. These are basic ASL (American Sign Language) emergency signs.
Emergency Signs
Help
Place a flat 'B' hand (fingers up, thumb in) on top of your closed fist (thumb up), then lift both hands upward together.
Emergency
Make an 'X' hand (index finger hooked) and tap it on your opposite wrist, then shake both open hands in front of you.
Fire
Spread your fingers and thumb like a flickering flame, and wave your hand near your mouth moving upward.
Earthquake
Press both flat hands together, then shake them side to side with a rumbling, grinding motion.
Flood / Water
Make a 'W' (three fingers up) and tap your chin for 'water'. For flood, raise both 'W' hands in a wavy motion from waist to chest.
Hurt / Pain
Point both index fingers at each other and twist them in opposite directions — the sign for pain.
Yes
Make a closed fist and nod it up and down, like a head saying 'yes'.
No
Snap your index and middle fingers down onto your thumb, like a mouth closing — the sign for no.
Pray
Clasp both hands together, palms touching, fingers interlaced — the sign for pray.
I Love You
Hold up your thumb, index finger, and pinky at once, palm facing out — the ILY sign.
Thank You
Place a flat hand at your chin, then move it out and down toward the person you're thanking.
Safe / Home
Cross your index fingers to form an 'R', then pull them apart into 'A' fists and bring your fingertips together like a roof.
