Tsunami Tracker
Live tsunami detection & wave propagation — see the wave moving toward shore.
No active tsunamis
No tsunami alerts or significant undersea earthquakes detected. The ocean is quiet right now.
Tsunami wave propagation model uses open-ocean speed (~700 km/h) and Haversine distance to estimate arrival times. Actual arrival times vary with ocean depth, coastal geometry, and seafloor topography. For situational awareness — always follow official evacuation orders from your local emergency management agency.
Tsunami Information
Earthquake detected but no tsunami generated. No action needed — stay informed.
Tsunami Advisory
Dangerous currents and waves expected. Stay off the beach and out of the water.
Tsunami Watch
Tsunami possible. Monitor local alerts and prepare to evacuate if upgraded.
Tsunami Warning
Tsunami imminent or occurring. Move to high ground or inland immediately.
The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami killed 230,000+ people across 14 countries. The 2011 Tōhoku tsunami (Japan) reached 130 feet and triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The 1964 Alaska earthquake tsunami struck the U.S. West Coast. Tsunamis can travel at jet speed (500+ mph) across oceans and arrive within minutes of a local quake.
In deep ocean, tsunami waves travel at 500+ mph (800 km/h) — the speed of a jet airliner. As they reach shallow water, they slow to 20–30 mph but grow to 30–100+ feet tall. The first wave is rarely the largest; waves can arrive for hours.
Before
- • Know if you live/work in a tsunami evacuation zone. Know your evacuation route to high ground.
- • Natural warning signs: strong shaking, ocean receding rapidly, or a loud ocean roar.
- • Prepare a go-bag with essentials. Keep it by the door.
- • Sign up for local tsunami alerts and WEA on your phone.
During
- • If you feel strong shaking near the coast: DON'T WAIT for an official alert. Move to high ground or inland immediately.
- • Go to high ground (100+ feet above sea level) or move 1–2 miles inland.
- • If you can't evacuate: go to the upper floors of a reinforced concrete building (4+ stories).
- • NEVER go to the beach to watch the wave. Tsunamis move faster than you can run.
- • Stay away until officials give the all-clear — multiple waves arrive over hours.
After
- • Stay on high ground until officials confirm it's safe to return.
- • Avoid floodwater and damaged buildings — structures may be unstable.
- • Check for injuries and help others only if you can do so safely.
- • Tsunami waves can continue for hours — the first wave is often not the largest.
