The zombie concept originates from Haitian Vodou folklore, where a 'zonbi' is a corpse reanimated by a bokor (sorcerer). Modern pop culture zombies began with George A. Romero's 'Night of the Living Dead' (1968). The CDC published a 'Zombie Preparedness' guide in 2011 as a tongue-in-cheek way to promote real emergency preparedness. Real-world parallels include rabies, toxoplasmosis, and cordyceps fungi (which zombifies ants). The concept is used by emergency agencies to model worst-case pandemic scenarios.

In fiction, zombies move at 1-4 mph (shamblers) to 8+ mph (sprinters). In reality, a rabies-like pathogen could spread through bites in a matter of weeks. The key survival factor is early detection and isolation — the first 48 hours of any outbreak are critical for containment and personal preparation.

Before

  • • Prepare a 30-day emergency kit: food, water, medical supplies, tools, and weapons for defense.
  • • Identify a defensible shelter: upper floors with limited access points, reinforced doors.
  • • Establish a communication plan with family and trusted allies — know where to meet.
  • • Stock barriers: plywood, nails, duct tape, and materials to seal windows and doors.
  • • Learn basic first aid and infection prevention — gloves, masks, and disinfectants.

During

  • • SHELTER IN PLACE: Stay indoors. Seal all entry points. Do not attempt to evacuate unless your shelter is compromised.
  • • Avoid contact with infected individuals. If someone is bitten, isolate them immediately.
  • • Conserve resources — ration food and water. Cook only during daylight to avoid drawing attention.
  • • Keep noise and light to a minimum — avoid attracting attention at night.
  • • If you must move: travel in groups, stay quiet, and carry defensive tools.
  • • Monitor emergency broadcasts — government and military channels may provide safe zone locations.

After

  • • Do not leave your shelter until officials confirm the threat is contained.
  • • Decontaminate anyone entering your shelter — remove outer clothing, wash with soap and water.
  • • Check your supplies and replenish if safe to do so.
  • • Watch for secondary threats: other survivors, contaminated water, and failing infrastructure.
  • • Help others only if you can do so without risking your own safety.

Official U.S. Government Guide

This is the real "Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse" guide published by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in 2011. The CDC created it as a tongue-in-cheek way to get people thinking about real emergency preparedness — the kit and plan below are the actual government recommendations that work for any disaster: hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, pandemics, or (hypothetically) zombies. Public-domain content from a U.S. federal agency.

"The rise of zombies in pop culture has given credence to the idea that a zombie apocalypse could happen. In such a scenario, the CDC would conduct an investigation, provide guidance, and mount a response. But you can take steps now to be prepared for any emergency." — CDC, 2011

The CDC says: once you have your kit, make a plan. This is how your family stays safe and connected during any emergency — zombie or otherwise.

1. Identify Emergency Types

Know the types of emergencies possible in your area — hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, or yes, even a zombie apocalypse.

2. Pick a Meeting Place

Choose a location for your family to regroup in case zombies invade your home. Pick one right outside your home and one outside your neighborhood.

3. Identify Your Contacts

Make a list of emergency contacts. Include an out-of-state contact — local lines may be down during a crisis.

4. Plan Your Evacuation Route

Map out multiple routes to your meeting place and to safety. Roads may be blocked or crowded — have alternates ready.
